SUPERIOR -- Bishop Raphael M. Fliss has appointed Julie Godfrey Miller as the new managing editor of the Superior Catholic Herald effective May 1.
Miller, staff writer for the paper since Aug. 2000, replaces interim editor Bill Kurtz. Kurtz, who lives in Milwaukee, came to Superior to help with the transition after the departure of longtime editor Sam Lucero.
Miller said, "This new position is a great opportunity for me. I am looking forward to the challenge of taking both the print and online editions of the Catholic Herald into the future. "
Miller, a native of the Superior area, graduated from Cathedral High School in 1965. She earned a bachelor's degree in English from The College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, Minn., in 1969, and an MBA in finance from Loyola University of Chicago in 1976.
She lived in Chicago and northern Illinois for 30 years and was employed in various professional and managerial positions in banking and insurance. Because of her background in English, Miller often took on company writing projects and helped other employees with their writing. She also operated her own writing business for a time.
Miller, who now lives in Duluth, Minn., returned to the Duluth-Superior area in Dec. 1999 to be closer to her parents, Tom and Audrey Godfrey of Superior. Miller also has a brother, Dennis, living in the area, and a sister, Bridget, who lives in St. Paul, Minn.
The Catholic Herald is part of the Milwaukee-based Catholic Press Apostolate. The paper was founded in 1953 under Bishop (later Cardinal) Albert G. Meyer, sixth bishop of Superior. The first four editors were priests of the diocese: Fr. Irving Klister (1953-55); Fr. Donn Tracy (1955-63); Fr. Clyde Zarski (1963) and Fr. Robert M. Urban (1963-1987).
Lucero, the first lay editor, joined the paper in 1987 and served for 14 years before accepting a position as assistant managing editor and online editor for the Milwaukee Catholic Herald.
