Congratulations from Bishop Fliss

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

My sincere congratulations goes out to the Superior Catholic Herald on 50 years of providing our local church with a Catholic perspective on the people, events and issues facing us on a daily basis.

I am particularly grateful to Bishop Albert G. Meyer who early on recognized the importance of Catholic news coverage, and had the courage to establish a diocesan newspaper in February, 1953.

My appreciation goes out as well to all the subsequent editors and staff members who continued tirelessly in their efforts to report news from around the diocese, the country and the world. Social justice efforts, liturgical practices, health care, Catholic education, evangelization, catechesis, along with stories about parishioners, columns, editorials and photos of life around the diocese are but a few of the ways in which the Superior Catholic Herald provides inspiration and unity to our diocesan journey of faith.

The Catholic Press Apostolate of Milwaukee is certainly to be noted. Without their expertise and cooperation on a day-to-day and week-to-week basis, this endeavor of Catholic communication would certainly not be possible.

Pastors and parish directors have been most instrumental in encouraging a well-informed People of God who are able to speak to the issues of today's world. Adult education is a recurring theme found in all Vatican II documents. The Superior Catholic Herald is a most effective means of nourishing, strengthening and challenging adult faith.

The diocesan paper has greatly assisted me in my mission of teaching the Word of God. Communication, dialogue, listening and hearing are vital aspects of any Christian community. Disagreement does not imply a lack of unity. In contrast, discussion and openness bring a greater unity and a renewed church.

I am most grateful to all who assist in bringing the message of Christ into all the homes of our Local Church through the Superior Catholic Herald.

Sincerely yours in the Lord,

Most Rev. Raphael M. Fliss
Bishop of Superior
