SUPERIOR--Anyone who has walked past the Catholic Herald office recently may have noticed some pretty big changes. The walls are freshly painted, the cleaned carpets look bluer and greener than ever before, the desks and furniture have been completely rearranged and new posters hang on the walls.

As of Feb. 10, there's also a new face in the office. Marcy Kasper, a life-long resident of Superior, just accepted and started her new position as full-time office manager. She replaces Rita Mehtala, who retired after 29 years at the paper.

A graduate of Superior Senior High School, Kasper attended Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College where she completed the office assistant program.

Prior to accepting her new position, Kasper worked a year and a half as a receptionist for a law firm in Duluth, Minn. She also worked for a short time at an investment firm, also located in Duluth.

After some restructuring in the law firm, Kasper found herself looking for another job. She applied for the receptionist/secretary position that opened up in the chancery after Rita LaVenture retired. Though she was not offered that job, her resume was later passed on to the Catholic Herald.

So far, Kasper said she is enjoying her new position. "I've found it to be a really wonderful experience," she said. "The people are very open and friendly and willing to help out. Everyone in the chancery has gone out of their way to make me feel welcome."

Though she is not Catholic, Kasper looks forward to learning more about Catholicism and said she is still searching for a spiritual dimension in her life.

Kasper is also happy to be working closer to her apartment, which is located in the south end of Superior. She rents from her fiance, Shawn Paulson. They have been engaged for three years and hope to be married soon.

Her mother, Carol Kasper, is now retired and living in Duluth. Kasper has four older sisters who live farther from home. They are Cheryl, who lives outside of Seattle; Jana, who works in Florida; Kelly, living in Arizona and Lori, who lives near Stevens Point, Wis.

Kasper also has three pets: a cat, a parrot and a pigeon. Paulson rescued the pigeon from a construction project, and Kasper is giving it a temporary home over the winter.

In her free time, she likes to read and pursue a variety of hobbies such as sewing and upholstery work, soap making, photography, cooking and cake decorating. She also enjoys gardening and is a member of an online gardening club.

Kasper can be reached via e-mail at mkasper@catholicdos.org.
