MERRILL -- A permanent sign was erected this past summer on the grounds of St. Francis Xavier Church in Merrill. On Wednesday, Oct. 27, Fr. James Horath, pastor, dedicated and blessed it in a ceremony that was attended by the students and staff of the school.

Mounted on the structure is a unique symbol that consists of a fish with a small bell and wind chime dangling from it. The fish is the symbol of the early Christian church, and according to legend, St. Francis Xavier, who is the patron of the parish, went through the village streets of India ringing a bell to attract the children. St. Francis would then teach and share with them the Catholic faith. This symbol serves to remind the community of the blessing of Catholic education and the parish's strong commitment to it.

The sign was a collaborative effort funded by the Knights of Columbus Council 1133, the Home and School Association and the parish. Much of the brick and cement work was donated by parishioners and members of the local community. The church now has its own place to not only advertise events that are happening, but also to share various Christian messages with all who pass by.
