Bishop Meyer Authorizes Official Diocesan Paper

Bishop Meyer

The Superior Catholic Herald was founded by Bishop Albert G. Meyer, and published its first edition on Feb. 14, 1953. Meyer was the publisher from 1946 to 1954, and since then, each bishop of Superior has been the publisher of the paper. The Catholic Herald now celebrates its 50th anniversary. (File photo)

To the Priests, Religious, and Faithful Laity of the Diocese of Superior.

It is indeed with much joy that I find it possible to address you through the medium of our own Diocesan Newspaper. February is Catholic Press month, the time for all Catholics to reflect on the importance of the Catholic Press, and then do something practical about it. The most practical think that I could think of doing was to offer you this Superior Edition of the Catholic Herald Citizen.

A very attractive arrangement was suggested to us by the management of The Catholic Herald Citizen in Milwaukee, and the result is this Superior Edition. To them I extend my sincere thanks for making this hoed-for diocesan newspaper a reality. To you I present this diocesan weekly not only for its intrinsic worth in offering you a variety or interesting and informative Catholic reading, but also for its power to bind Bishop, Priests and people more intimately together in the common cause of hour holy Faith.

Almost seven years ago I was appointed your Bishop, on February 18, 1946. On the occasion of my taking possession of the diocese the following May, I spoke there words to the priests, religious, and people assembled in our Cathedral Church here in Superior: "I have come to work with you and for you, for the spread of Christ's Kingdom in the Diocese of Superior. Our Cathedral Church is dedicated to Christ the King. I have chosen as the motto of my episcopal coat of arms the prayer of the Sacred Heart., 'Thy Kingdom Come!' Our sole common aim, therefore, is the establishment of His Kingdom in the souls of men, in the families and parishes of this Diocese, in the whole length and breadth of this portion of the Kingdom confided to our care. To accomplish this we need the unselfish, ever-ready help of all."
