Park Falls -- New state-of-the-art playground equipment greeted students at St. Anthony's School in Park Falls when they returned to school in early September.
The new equipment, costing about $40,000, was installed on the playground located between the school and the parish center this summer. School principal Brent Balsavich said it's been a hit with the 118 students.
"They love the new playground equipment and it's a nice addition to the school. We also received a lot of positive comments from members of the Park Falls community," he said.
Balsavich noted the new equipment was installed over a special rubberized underlayment that cushions the surface of the playground area while allowing water to seep into the ground.
He said the old playground equipment, installed several decades ago, served its purpose but was deteriorating and becoming a safety concern. He noted additional updates on the playground will include new lighting, refurbished basketball hoops, fencing and other general maintenance and repairs.
St. Anthony playground committee co-chairperson Cindy Koller said fund-raiser efforts for the project actually started seven years ago but intensified during the past few years.
She said the combined efforts of the school staff, students, parents, alumni, parishioners, civic groups and the greater Park Falls community really made the project possible. A special plaque listing names of people and businesses who donated over $100 to the playground fund will be installed at the playground.
