SIREN -- Each year one woman in the diocese is chosen for a special honor -- the Pax Christi award -- for the Christ-like qualities she exhibits in her daily life. The award is presented by Bishop Raphael M. Fliss at the annual Superior Diocesan Council of Catholic Women convention.

Each of the five deaneries in the diocese recommends candidates for the honor. This year there was a list of 18 nominees, which was narrowed down to five finalists: Alice Mianecki of St. Anthony Abbot Parish, Cumberland; Gerty Morrow of Our Lady of the North Parish, Phillips; Faith Kovach of Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Ashland; Mary Shimek of St. Catherine Parish, Sarona; and Susie Mortag of St. Mary Parish, Sayner. From among the five, Fliss selected Mianecki, from the Southwest Deanery, as the winner.

Mianecki became a Catholic during her college years. She married her high school sweetheart and had nine children. Her parish ministries include parish council member, lector, eucharistic minister, religious education teacher. She has also been involved in the community through 4-H, League of Women Voters, Meals on Wheels, Hospice Care and many other programs.

Mianecki has also served as CCW president at the parish, deanery and diocesan level, and as a director-at-large. She was also a member of the Milwaukee Province board of directors.

The Pax Christi award was instituted in 1960 by Bishop George A. Hammes to replace the Mother of the Year Award. Many women were not eligible for that previous award because they had no children.
