PARK FALLS --Students at St. Anthony School will be enjoying new playground equipment this year, thanks to the combined efforts of the school's staff, students, parents, alumni, parish members, civic groups and the greater Park Falls community.

"This has really been a total team effort," said St. Anthony School playground committee co-chairperson Cindy Koller, whose six-member group has spearheaded the intense fund-raising efforts during the past school year.

She said the playground fund was actually started seven years ago and had $4,783 in the bank when the new committee -- all parents -- took over last September.

"When the call went out for help to raise funds, the parents really stepped forward," she said, noting the committee immediately designed a fund-raising strategy, including contacting area businesses for don'ations.

By giving $100 or more to the project, businesses and individuals will have the honor of being listed on a special plaque on the playground when it is completed before the start of the next school year.

It should be a rather large plaque, because of the huge support by area businesses. "Many businesses have gone over the $100 donation. They have been so supportive," said Koller, adding that donations from students, parents, staff, school committees, parishioners and area residents have been equally impressive.

"They all have been very generous; we've had great support from committees within the schools that have given $10,490 to the project. Thanks to all the help, it's finally going to happen this year."

Since last September, over $27,000 has been raised, for a grand total of $32,273. Koller said estimates for phase one of the playground project, which will include a new central climbing unit, swings and new underlayment for the entire playground, will total about $45,000.

The school will follow strict state codes when the new equipment is installed with volunteer labor. Koller said, "The old playground equipment is aging terribly and is a real safety issue. We really need the new equipment."

Koller noted that the Park Falls community, not just the members of the parish, recognizes the need for the new playground located between the school and church.

"This is the only playground in the city west of state Highway 13. This is a well-used playground and will benefit many, many children," she said, noting it will also be a public relations tool for St. Anthony. "It is one more way to show how much we care about our students. The playground is a 'mini-city' and a real educational experience for the children. It's a wonderful extension of the classroom experience."

Koller added, "Our students, who were a big part of the fund-raising efforts by hosting bake sales, coin drives, cookie dough sales É, will have a real sense of ownership."

Koller said, "We are also teaching the children to give back to the community in many ways. We want them to know the joy of giving, not just receiving."
