SUPERIOR -- Michelle Vinoski was named assistant principal of Cathedral School in October. She joined the school's staff in 1999 as a math and computer teacher and over the years under the mentorship of principal Tim Johnson gradually took on more administrative tasks.

"I've been doing most of the duties of the job for four or five years," Vinoski said.

She is a Wisconsin state licensed principal and has a master's degree in educational administration with an emphasis in pre-K through 12 principalship from the University of Wisconsin- Superior and is currently at work there on a specialist degree in curriculum and instruction.

She teaches half of each day and then assists Johnson with two major projects: curriculum development and accreditation.

In writing the school curriculum, parents will know what each child enrolled is expected to be taught. The curriculum will follow Wisconsin state standards.

Vinoski has also begun work on the school's upcoming accreditation. The first step in the process is a self-study.

Her day-to-day duties include scheduling, both for the school year and for special events, and if Johnson is unavailable, she handles disciplinary issues. She is also the chairwoman of Cathedral's marketing committee.

A native of Ironwood, Mich., and a Catholic school alumna, Vinoski came to Cathedral after a teaching stint in Green Bay. She is 41, hopes to be a principal someday and values the opportunity of assisting Johnson and learning the ropes.

While enjoying her "amazing graduate school program" at UWS, she said her on-the-job experiences are priceless.

"You don't just walk out the door (of a university degree program) and become a principal," she said.
