ASHLAND — Bishop Peter F. Christensen awarded Brenda Mayer with the Pax Christi Award at the Superior Diocesan Council of Catholic Women’s 2010 banquet gala, held in conjunction with the council’s 60th annual convention. Mayer, a member of Our Lady of the Lakes, Balsam Lake, received the award on Monday, June 21, at the Hotel Chequamegon in Ashland.

Bishop Christensen said Mayer was chosen to receive the award because of her “unique contributions to the Catholic Church.”
Along with Mayer, this year’s Pax Christi nominees included Karen Firnstahl from Holy Rosary, Medford, Jan Provost, Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior; and Lois Blonski from the Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Rhinelander.

Nominees for the Pax Christi Award may be either lay or religious women, single or married. Each parish in the diocese is allotted one nomination. The diocesan deaneries screen the nominees and forward one nominee from each deanery to Bishop Christensen, who then selects the winner.

Lucille Brandner, president of the SDCCW and a member of Holy Rosary Parish, Medford, said that the women who receive the Pax Christi Award are chosen for their outstanding personal qualities and for their active roles in their parishes.

“We want to show all of the women in the diocese how important they all are to the survival of the parishes,” Brandner said. “The women do so much.”
