July 5, 2009 Mark 6:1-6 I look at this story and ask myself what it means for me in the 21st century in my own home town. If Jesus were to appear on our streets today, would we be overjoyed or would we have negative reactions to this ordinary man? The answer lies within each of us as we look into our own hearts to determine the extent and depth of our faith. If I have a poor self image, how can I see goodness and wisdom in another? The task is to clear out the hometown streets within my heart so I can become acquainted with the wisdom and goodness within and around me. It is then that I can see the prophetic gifts that God has revealed in my own space. Jesus wants to set up a hometown style within each of us but if we cannot accept ourselves with our possibilities, potential, and humanity, can we recognize him as a prophet in our midst? Today's Gospel asks us to honor the prophets of today. It is calling us to appreciate people who are family and friends that have prophetic gifts. It is a wake-up call to appreciate a spouse, children, neighbors and friends who are ordinary but who are truly the presence of God in our midst. Remember, the face of Jesus is often a common face that is difficult to recognize, but it can become clearer because of the faith that is planted deeply within us. Take time today to accept Jesus into your everyday life and then enjoy the richness of a faith-filled relationship that only you in your own unique way, can experience.
